AI4Bharat

AI4Bharat is an open-source research initiative based at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) dedicated to developing state-of-the-art AI technology and open datasets for Indian languages. It builds foundational language models, speech-to-text engines, text-to-speech pipelines, and benchmark evaluation suites covering 22 scheduled Indian languages.

Its major releases include IndicTrans2 (a multilingual neural machine translation engine across all 22 Indian languages), IndicWav2Vec, and IndicTTS, all published under permissive open-source licences. AI4Bharat’s datasets and models serve as core digital public infrastructure powering national translation initiatives, judicial multilingual tools, and grassroots civic technology.
