IndiaSpend

IndiaSpend was India’s first data journalism initiative, founded in 2011 by journalist Govindraj Ethiraj. It pioneered the model of using public datasets — government surveys, budget documents, RTI responses, academic research — to produce explanatory journalism on health, education, environment, agriculture, and governance. For researchers and journalists, IndiaSpend is valuable not just as a news source but as a demonstration of which Indian datasets can be fruitfully mined for stories. Their archives, going back over a decade, contain thousands of data-driven explainers and investigations. IndiaSpend also runs fact-checking (FactChecker.in) and training programmes for data journalism.
