Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan

The Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS) is a grassroots peasant and workers’ organisation founded in 1990 in rural central Rajasthan. MKSS pioneered the concept of Jan Sunwais (public hearings), where official muster rolls and development expenditures are read aloud to village residents to audit corruption and wage theft.

MKSS’s decade-long mobilization formed the foundation of the National Campaign for Peoples’ Right to Information (NCPRI), directly leading to the enactment of Rajasthan’s state RTI law (2000) and India’s national Right to Information Act (2005). MKSS also played a pivotal role in the design, passage, and social audit mechanisms of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
