Open Budgets India (OBI) is the single most comprehensive source for machine-readable Indian budget data. While the Union Budget and state budgets are publicly available as PDFs, OBI converts them into structured, analysable datasets. It covers Union Budget expenditures, state budgets, municipal budgets, and scheme-level allocations. For researchers, OBI solves the fundamental problem of Indian fiscal analysis: budget documents are designed for parliamentary presentation, not quantitative research. OBI’s cleaned datasets let you compare allocations across years, across states, and across schemes without spending weeks cleaning PDF-scraped data. The platform is maintained by the Centre for Budget and Governance Accountability (CBGA).
