Offline-oriented tools for subtitling, organising media and documenting oral knowledge in Indigenous and low-resourced languages
meta.wikimedia.orgOpenSpeaks develops three small browser-based applications for community language documenters and archivists. Subtitler edits captions for local media; Tome records consent, provenance, participants and other oral-knowledge metadata; and Bento inspects, organises, measures and compresses audio and video collections.
The tools are designed to remain usable with slow or absent connectivity and to keep private or sensitive recordings on the user’s device. They interoperate with Wikimedia Commons and specialist archive metadata formats. All three are open source and free, but remain in alpha or beta and should be tested carefully before being made part of a critical archival workflow.
