The MPI approach is especially useful for India because it moves poverty analysis beyond income and captures deprivation in multiple welfare dimensions. The India-facing material published through NITI and allied institutions is used by civil society and researchers to identify intervention priorities, especially where state-level welfare performance differs sharply within districts. Use it when the question is about “who is left behind” rather than just how much poverty exists in aggregate.
