NCRB Crime in India

The National Crime Records Bureau’s Crime in India report is the canonical source for crime statistics in India. Published annually, it provides state and district-level data on IPC crimes (murder, rape, kidnapping, theft, rioting), SLL crimes, crimes against women, children, SC/ST, cyber crimes, accidental deaths, and suicides. For researchers, the data enables analysis of crime patterns, police effectiveness, and criminal justice system performance — though with well-documented limitations around underreporting, misclassification, and political interference in data collection. The data is available as PDF reports and increasingly as downloadable tables. Used by researchers, journalists, and policy analysts despite (and sometimes because of) its limitations.
