NWDP Village Boundaries
Free village boundary shapefiles for all Indian states and UTs — downloadable in GeoJSON, KML, and SHP formats from the National Water Data Portal
nwdp.nwic.gov.inThe National Water Data Portal (NWDP), maintained by the National Water Informatics Centre (NWIC), hosts one of the most requested but hardest-to-find GIS layers for India: village boundary shapefiles covering every state and union territory. Produced by the Geological Survey of India, these files demarcate the geographic boundaries of India’s ~660,000 villages. For researchers, civic technologists, and anyone doing spatial analysis of Indian data, village boundaries are essential infrastructure — they let you map any village-level data (Census, MGNREGA, eGramSwaraj, NFHS) onto actual geography. The data is available in three formats (GeoJSON, KML, SHP) and is freely downloadable. The dataset was last updated in May 2025.
