Allmaps
Open-source web platform for georeferencing, curating, and overlaying high-resolution historical maps from digital library IIIF repositories
allmaps.orgAllmaps is an open-source suite of web tools for georeferencing and viewing historical maps hosted on IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework) servers. Built by Bert Spaan and supported by digital heritage institutions, it allows researchers to align scanned library maps with modern geographic coordinates directly in the browser without downloading or re-hosting massive image files.
Allmaps stores georeferencing transformations as lightweight Web Annotations that can be warped and rendered on the fly in Leaflet, OpenLayers, MapLibre, or QGIS. It enables archives, cartographers, and urban historians to layer colonial survey sheets, antique plans, and historical estate maps over contemporary satellite imagery.
