Paperless-ngx

Paperless-ngx is a community-maintained, open-source document management system designed to index, organize, and search personal and institutional paper trails. It ingests PDFs, images, office documents, and emails from watch folders, scanners, or its web interface, runs optical character recognition (OCR) via Tesseract, and generates searchable PDF archives.

The software uses machine learning to automatically match tags, correspondents, document types, and custom metadata fields based on document contents. It includes a REST API, multi-user permissions, audit workflows, and full-text search with auto-completion and highlighting. For researchers, legal teams, journalists, and civic groups handling large volumes of scanned records, Right to Information (RTI) responses, or public filings, Paperless-ngx provides a self-hostable, private alternative to proprietary document archives.
