ODK (Open Data Kit)

ODK is the underlying engine behind KoboToolbox and many other mobile data collection platforms. It provides the core tools — ODK Collect (Android app for offline form filling), ODK Central (server for managing forms and submissions), and XLSForm (spreadsheet-based form design). For Indian civil society, ODK’s significance is that it works reliably in low-connectivity environments — field workers can collect survey data in remote villages, forest areas, and urban slums without internet, and sync when they return to connectivity. Thousands of Indian research studies, NGO monitoring systems, and government surveys run on ODK or its derivatives. The ecosystem is entirely open-source, with a large global community and excellent documentation.
