Cliopatria

Cliopatria is an open-source historical GIS dataset developed as part of the Seshat Global History Databank project. It provides temporal polygon boundaries and territorial extents for thousands of historical polities, empires, kingdoms, and sovereign entities worldwide from 3400 BCE up to the modern era.

Distributed as GeoJSON and TopoJSON layers, Cliopatria allows researchers, cartographers, and digital humanities scholars to render dynamic historical maps, track territorial expansion and contraction over centuries, and integrate historical sovereignty data into GIS tools like QGIS and MapLibre.
